Leveling Basics

AION 2 Global caps at level 45 in Season 1. The fastest road there is almost entirely the yellow Main Story (Episode) quests — not grinding monsters. This page explains the XP sources, the Ascension gauge that gates the story, and the systems that actually move your power while you level.

Overview

The Global launch caps characters at level 45 in Season 1. Reaching it is a questing problem, not a grinding problem: the Episode (main story) quests hand out the large majority of the XP to 45, and deliberately farming monsters is the slow way up. Every major leveling guide published since launch agrees on the same core loop — follow the yellow story marker, and only step away when the story itself is gated.

The 1–45 run is also the tutorial. The game expects you to learn your class chains, aerial combat and flight stamina management on the way up — endgame content (Nightmare Dungeons, the Ascension Trial, the Abyss) assumes all of it. Speed-run the story if you like, but actually press the buttons.

Level cap 45 (Global, Season 1) is confirmed across multiple community trackers and was stated by NC's hosts during the 4 September 2026 livestream. Pacing figures below (hours to 45, regional breakpoints) come from community guides and are not first-party — treat them as indicative until verified in your own client.

XP Sources

XP arrives from a small set of activities. The story is the spine; the rest fill gaps when the story is gated.

SourceBest used forStatus
Main Story (Episode quests)The bulk of XP 1–45; also unlocks zones and systemsConfirmed (multi-source)
Regional quests (green)Filling the Ascension/region gauge that gates the storyRole confirmed; breakpoints unconfirmed
Sealed Dungeons & StrongholdsBracket XP and Daevanion crystals when story thinsCommunity — Unconfirmed
Daeva PassPassive XP for doing the aboveCommunity — Unconfirmed
Monster grindingAvoid — low XP per hour versus questingConfirmed (inefficient)

Two details make the table work in practice. First, regular side quests are not on the list — most are low-XP detours, and the guides that measured them recommend skipping anything that sends you off the story path for a small payoff. Second, Regional quests are only worth picking up when they overlap where you already are: one trip, multiple rewards.

The Ascension Gauge

The story is not gated by level alone — it is gated by Ascension, a per-region progress gauge that fills as you complete regional content. When the yellow marker stops advancing, the fix is almost always the same: open the region, see what fills the gauge (green Regional quests, Sealed Dungeons, Strongholds), clear the cheapest ones, and the story resumes.

  • Read the gate before switching activities — a missing quest, an Ascension gauge and a hard boss each need a different fix
  • Fill the gauge with content inside the region you are already in, not across the map
  • Gauge content also drops gear materials, so filling it raises Item Level for the dungeon doors ahead
  • Some community guides call the same regional progress bar the one that unlocks your wings — same gauge, different wording

Community route maps place Ascension walls at roughly levels 22, 32 and 45. The gating mechanic itself is widely confirmed; the exact levels are community-reported and not first-party.

Character Level vs Item Level

Two numbers move separately: Character Level (from XP) and Item Level (from gear). Level gets you into zones and quests; Item Level gets you through dungeon doors. A level wall is solved by quests, an Item Level wall by gear and upgrades — do not confuse the two.

  • Character Level unlocks quests, zones and progression gates
  • Item Level is computed from equipped gear and gates certain content
  • Combat Power is the broader measure of how comfortably you actually clear

While leveling, keep this simple: equip what drops, upgrade the weapon, and let the story carry the rest. Chasing Item Level above your current story gate is wasted effort — the gear you can buy or farm at level 30 will be irrelevant by 40.

What Unlocks When

A consolidated view of the progression systems that matter on the road to 45. Levels are community-reported and consistent across guides, but patch notes can move them — treat as indicative.

Flight & Travel

Free flight is the biggest time-saver in AION 2 — it removes most of the travel time that dominates a normal themepark route. It is also a resource to manage, not an unlimited taxi.

  • Flight stamina is limited early and grows as you progress — plan routes in straight lines, not scattershot hops
  • Cluster objectives before you take off; don't cross the map between single quests
  • Dying or falling out of the air costs more time than walking would have — watch the stamina bar on long glides
  • Aerial combat is a real system with its own skills; practise it while enemies are still forgiving

Flight-stamina numbers and measured travel times are not yet published here — the habits above hold regardless of the exact values.

Faction Choice

Pick Elyos (start: Poeta) or Asmodian (start: Ishalgen). Both get the same classes and the same amount of content; the difference is visual (wing colour) and which region you level in. There is no gender lock — every class is open to any gender, and character-creation body options are purely cosmetic and do not affect speed, weight or damage.

FactionStarting zoneNotes
ElyosPoetaLight-winged faction; levels in the southern half of Atreia
AsmodianIshalgenDark-winged faction; levels in the northern half of Atreia

Starting zones (Poeta / Ishalgen) are confirmed across guides. Faction choice does not change power — it only changes which half of Atreia you level in.

Common Leveling Mistakes

The same five mistakes show up in every 'why am I slow' thread since launch. All five are avoidable.

  • Grinding monsters for XP — the single slowest way to level; quests pay several times more per hour
  • Clearing every side quest — most are low-value detours; take overlapping Regional quests, skip the rest
  • Under-geared weapon — clear speed is damage, and damage is your weapon; equip drops and upgrade it
  • Confusing Item Level with Character Level — one is solved by quests, the other by gear
  • Skipping the tutorial systems — flight, aerial combat and skill chains are assumed knowledge at 45
